The Emsland NPP was connected to the national grid in 1988. The Emsland plant has its own closed-loop cooling-water circuit and cooling tower because the water supply from the Ems River is not sufficient to meet the plant's total cooling-water requirements. Situated beneath the cooling tower is a water storage tank, which is two meters deep and has a diameter of 138 meters. Cooling water is pumped from this storage tank to the reactor. Only the cooling water that evaporates in the cooling tower is replaced by water from the Ems. If the Ems is running low, the plant has access to an auxiliary water storage tank in Geeste (approx. 14 km from the plant).
