The first controlled nuclear fission at the Krümmel NPP took place on September 14, 1983, after a ten-year construction phase.
The water used for the cooling circuit is taken from the Elbe River. After use, the water undergoes primary treatment, is oxygenated and then fed back into the Elbe.
